HEALTH

The Griffon is generally a healthy and robust breed with the average life span of approximately 12 years.

Currently there are no RKC Health Scheme requirements or recommendations for the breed.

Being a Bracycelaphic breed ( short faced), Griffon breeders and owners are proactive in contributing to the research into the respiratory condition B.O.A.S. There isn’t, currently, specific test (s) pertinent to the Griffon.

Best practise is to test for eye conditions that could prove to be hereditary. Eye testing sessions are often held by Breed Club and General Championship Shows at a reduced rate.

Luxating Patella ( slipping kneecap) testing is also encouraged. GBBA hold Patella testing sessions, approximately every two years, that is undertaken by a qualified veterinary surgeon. Members receive a subsidy to encourage participation.

Chiari Malformation (CM) / Syringomelia (SM) - This neurological condition is known in Griffons. There is an immense amount of research taking place, that all of the Griffon Clubs have contributed to, both with data and financially.

A few breeders do have their stock MRI scanned although there is no guarantee that a ‘clear’  scan will produce ‘clear’ puppies.
GBBA contribute to the cost of having the scans graded by the BVA/KC scheme.
